What should you do after a hit-and-run accident?

Imagine you're struck by a speeding driver and your car goes out of control and into a ditch. You're seriously hurt with a broken leg, and as you watch the driver who caused the accident zoom away, you realize that with that driver goes your chances of holding him accountable for the crash.

You might not be completely at a loss. If you were hurt in a hit-and-run incident, here's what you need to do:

Immediately call 911: It's vital that you get the medical attention you need and make a record of what happened through a police report to make note of the crime that occurred when the at-fault driver left the scene. Calling 911 will ensure that both of these happen. The police will open a case and try to track down the hit-and-run motorist.

Document evidence of the accident: If you're able, take pictures with your smartphone of the accident scene. Also, take notes of statements from witnesses who may have seen what occurred and collect their names and contact info.

Get a copy of the police report: After the accident, contact the police station to obtain a copy of your accident report.

Notify your insurance company of the accident: Call your insurance company and tell them what happened, but don't accept an insurance settlement until after you've spoken with an attorney.

Discuss your case with an attorney: An attorney can help you navigate your situation to determine if there's any way you can pursue financial compensation related to your injuries.

If you were seriously hurt in a hit-and-run crash, the most important thing is to track down the missing driver. When police locate this driver, you may be able to hold him or her liable for your damages.
