Carroll County accident raises questions about fire engine

Although Georgia has several ports and train lines, most of the trade in the state moves by road. Tractor-trailers are not the only heavy vehicles near all of us. Emergency services and disaster relief often move in large trucks and often hit the road in circumstances that are less than ideal.

Driving large trucks and transports takes a lot of training and practice. Georgia and other states have high standards for licensing specific types of drivers, as with commercial driver's licenses and emergency vehicle operation certificates.

One new driver who had not been certified may have caused two serious injuries when he pulled a fire engine onto the road in Carroll County. The man was apparently also not certified as a firefighter, leading to questions about the county's policy in operating emergency services.

The victims had just passed through a green light, and the driver apparently saw the fire engine at rest on the side of the road. When the collision occurred, their car's air bags deployed but both people suffered injuries to their lower bodies. The Georgia State Police cited the fire engine's driver with failure to yield and continue to investigate the accident.

Regardless of any criminal charges that may be filed after an accident, victims of truck accidents or other collisions with heavy vehicles may have a case in civil court for financial damages. Funds can help with medical recovery or supply income when people are unable to resume work. An attorney can help create a lawsuit and advise on the best strategy to succeed.
