A sideswipe collision can be more serious than some think

Any type of car accident can range in severity. Some people may end up with little damage to their vehicles or themselves after another vehicle bumps theirs, but other individuals could easily end up with serious injuries from an event many Georgia residents may not consider serious.

One type of accident that some people may not consider as serious as others is a sideswipe accident. However, any time two vehicles come in contact with each other, the chance exists that a serious accident will take place, and sideswipe collisions can easily turn into something much worse than a few scrapes to a vehicle's paint job.

What causes sideswipe collisions?

Like most accidents, various factors can contribute to sideswipe collisions. The main cause of a sideswipe is that at least one vehicle failed to remain in the correct lane. Additionally, this type of incident could happen between vehicles traveling the same direction or opposite directions. Some common contributing factors to sideswipe accidents include the following:

  • A driver changing lanes without checking blind spots
  • Skidding or hydroplaning on wet roads
  • Drowsy driving
  • Drunk driving
  • Multiple drivers attempting to merge into the same lane at the same time
  • Distracted driving

Unfortunately, a sideswipe can cause a substantial amount of damage, particularly because it could cause one or more drivers to lose control of a vehicle. If another driver hits the side of your car, the unexpected jolt may cause your vehicle to move in an unintended direction, and while you may try to remain steady or correct the unintended movement, you could easily overcorrect or otherwise be unable to get the vehicle back under control.

Complications of sideswipes

In addition to causing you to lose control, a sideswipe could also cause another vehicle to overturn due to swerving, and the unexpected movement of the vehicle could result in the hit vehicle striking other vehicles or even leaving the roadway, where it could collide with trees, light poles or other objects.

As you can tell, a sideswipe accident is nothing to brush off. If another driver swipes your vehicle due to negligent or reckless actions, you could end up in a serious crash that leaves you with severe injuries. If so, you may want to keep in mind that you have legal options for seeking monetary restitution from the driver considered at fault for damages permitted under state law.
