Here's why you need an attorney after a truck accident

If you or your loved one were in an accident with a semitruck or another large commercial vehicle, you probably naturally expect the trucking company to step up to the plate and take care of your medical expenses, missed wages and other losses.

Well, don't count on it. No matter how clearly it seems like the truck caused the wreck you were in, the trucking company isn't likely to rush toward a settlement. Trying to handle the issue on your own isn't wise for the following reasons:

  • There may be multiple defendants in your case -- and they may be trying to shift liability around. The driver, the trucking company, the maintenance company that worked on the truck and others could all be involved in the case. Since every settlement is funded by insurance companies, there may be multiple insurance companies trying to evade liability.
  • The investigation can be huge. As a layperson, you don't know where to look for evidence about what caused the wreck -- and have no real means of securing it even if you do. An attorney knows how to obtain and review the evidence that could win your case.
  • The laws and regulations are complicated. Because of interstate travel, several different jurisdictions may be involved in your case -- and there are federal regulations that also have to be considered when looking at factors that may have contributed to the wreck.
  • The insurance companies may try to avoid liability completely. How? In Ohio, if you're more than 50% responsible for your own injuries, you cannot collect damages from the other parties. Insurance companies often try to shift blame to passenger vehicles for every trucking accident.

When you're suffering serious injuries from a trucking accident, don't let the insurance companies and powerful trucking companies push you around. Our office takes every case seriously and has the experience to help.
