Sharing the road with large trucks requires being aware of the limits of these vehicles. While truck drivers have a large burden to drive safely and watch out for others on the road, you also share in that duty.

Eye contact
If possible, you should make eye contact with the driver when you can to acknowledge that he or she sees you. You will likely not be able to do this prior to passing. But watch for the side mirror. If you can see the driver in the side mirror, then he or she can see you.
Turn signal
A good way to alert the driver is to use your turn signal. If you are safely behind the truck and following at an appropriate distance, the driver should be able to see you in the side mirror and see your signal.
Attention
When passing, you need to pay attention and move swiftly. Do not stay beside a large truck. This is one of the blind spots and the driver will be unable to see you or may not know you are still there.
Passing a large truck can be dangerous if you do not take the right precautions. Never assume a driver knows you are there. Never take for granted that the driver can see you. Be cautious and aware. Move swiftly and try to make contact with the driver if possible.
